With everyone more aware of where their diamonds are from here are a few facts...
$8.4 billion worth of diamonds a year come from African countries.
More than 99% of diamond are from conflict-free sources and traded under the UN mandated Kimberley Process.
Sierra Leone is now at peace and exported around $142 million diamonds in 2005.
Under the Kimberley Process, rough diamonds can only be exported and approved when accompanied by a certificate from the exporting country.
Diamond revenues enable every child in Botswana to receive a free education up to the age of 13.
As of November 2006, there were 71 members of the Kimberley process.
It is estimated that one million people work in the informal alluvial diamond digging sector.
An estimated 5 million people have access to appropriate health care globally thanks to revenues from diamonds.
